RESIDENCIAS ALTOS DE SURITAIMA

A Complete Restoration of a Legacy Architectural Website Case Study · 2014 → 2026 Project Overview

Originally conceived in 2014 for a private architectural, construction and real estate firm in Caracas, Venezuela, Residencias Altos de Suritaima was designed to promote an exclusive residential development nestled in the south-eastern hills of the city.

The original website fulfilled its commercial purpose by presenting the residential complex, architectural information, apartment availability and reservation details. Following its first release, the project received a responsive redesign in 2017, extending its lifespan for several years.

Nearly a decade later, I decided to revisit the entire project—not simply to modernize its appearance, but to completely rethink how it should perform, feel and communicate using today's frontend technologies and UX standards.

The result became a complete restoration rather than a redesign.

The Challenge

Legacy projects often carry something that newly created websites never do: history. Rather than starting with a blank canvas, this project involved preserving the original architectural identity while replacing virtually every technical component behind it. The challenge consisted of modernizing every interaction without losing the essence of the original design. This required rebuilding navigation, layouts, media integration, animations, responsive behaviour, user interactions, backend communication and API integrations from the ground up.

Design Objectives

From the beginning, several objectives guided the redevelopment: + Preserve the visual identity established by the original branding. + Improve visual hierarchy and readability throughout the website. + Create a cleaner, more elegant and immersive browsing experience. + Deliver a seamless responsive experience across smartphones, tablets and desktop devices. + Replace outdated interactions with modern frontend techniques.Increase usability while reducing interface   friction. + Produce a portfolio-quality standalone project demonstrating current frontend development practices. Complete Front-End Restoration

Every section of the website was carefully reviewed and reconstructed. The homepage received an entirely new content hierarchy, improved spacing, stronger typography and better distribution of visual elements. Video presentation was redesigned into a much cleaner cinematic showcase with carefully framed media integration that provides visual consistency across different source formats. Navigation behaviour was refined to provide a smoother experience across all screen sizes, while responsive layouts were rebuilt to create a more fluid reading flow regardless of device orientation. Even subtle interface elements—including transitions, hover states, spacing and motion—were revisited to achieve a more cohesive visual language throughout the entire experience.

Apartment Catalogue Experience

One of the most significant improvements was the complete redevelopment of the apartment catalogue. The original gallery evolved into a highly customized implementation of PhotoSwipe, allowing visitors to explore architectural floor plans inside a carefully tailored lightbox experience designed specifically for this project. Apartment availability remains organised floor by floor, while high-resolution rendered plans can now be viewed through an interface that feels substantially cleaner, faster and more immersive than the original implementation. The gallery was extensively personalised beyond its default behaviour to better reflect the overall visual identity of the website.

Interactive 3D Location Experience

Perhaps the most technically ambitious component of the project is the complete replacement of the traditional embedded Google Map. Instead of presenting a static location, visitors are introduced to a fully interactive Google Maps 3D experience built using several Google Maps Platform APIs. The experience begins with a cinematic aerial presentation of Caracas before guiding the visitor through an animated route towards the residential complex. Dynamic camera movements, smooth transitions, animated route rendering and carefully choreographed viewpoints transform what would normally be a simple map into an engaging visual presentation that reinforces both orientation and architectural context. This became one of the project's defining features.

Intelligent Appointment System

The contact section was completely redesigned and evolved into a modern appointment request application. Beyond its visual redesign, the system now incorporates:

✓ Advanced client-side validation ✓ Server-side PHP validation ✓ Asynchronous JavaScript communication (Fetch API) ✓ Intelligent visual feedback ✓ Animated success and error notifications ✓ Progressive form validation ✓ Accessibility improvements ✓ Loading states and interaction locking ✓ Spam-resistant processing ✓ PHPMailer integration ✓ Secure backend handling

The objective was not simply to validate form fields, but to create an interaction that clearly communicates every system state while remaining intuitive for the user.

Technologies Used

Frontend: HTML5 / CSS3 / JavaScript (ES6). Backend: PHP / PHPMailer. External Services: Google Maps JavaScript API / Google Maps 3D / Routes API / Places API / Map Tiles API.

UI Components

✓ PhotoSwipe Lightbox ✓ Responsive Media ✓ Custom animations ✓ Progressive validation system

Technical Highlights

Among the most notable engineering improvements included in this redevelopment are:

  • Complete responsive reconstruction.
  • Custom Google Maps 3D implementation.
  • Cinematic route animation.
  • Fully asynchronous contact workflow.
  • Advanced frontend and backend validation.
  • Modern responsive video integration.
  • Extensive PhotoSwipe customisation.
  • Improved accessibility and interaction states.
  • API restriction and security implementation.
  • Enhanced UX micro-interactions throughout the interface.

Outcome

The final result is far more than an updated website. It represents the complete restoration of one of my own legacy projects through the application of modern frontend engineering principles, responsive architecture and contemporary user experience design. Rather than replacing the project's original identity, the objective was to preserve its essence while bringing every aspect of the experience into today's web standards. More than ten years after its original conception, Residencias Altos de Suritaima now stands as one of the most technically accomplished and personally rewarding projects within my portfolio.

Personal Reflection

This project became much more than a website redevelopment. It became an opportunity to revisit my own work with years of additional experience, stronger technical knowledge and a far more mature understanding of interface design. Rebuilding a project that originally belonged to an earlier stage of my career allowed me to measure not only how technology has evolved, but also how my own approach to design, frontend architecture and user experience has grown over time. For that reason, Residencias Altos de Suritaima – 2026 Edition occupies a very special place within my portfolio. It reflects the journey from the solutions I once considered sufficient to the level of craftsmanship I now strive to achieve in every project.
